Kedungurang Village Clean Cookstoves Demonstration

2015-12-03 13:24:49

In order to ensure successful cookstove dissemination in the target communities, it is important to engage in various marketing activities. Marketing activities are aimed at increasing public awareness; educating consumers about the dangers of indoor air pollution caused by traditional stoves; introducing the various government-approved clean cookstoves and its respective emissions, efficiency and safety facets; and finally, to convince consumers of the importance of replacing their dirty, traditional stoves with a clean cookstove.

One of the marketing activities undertaken to achieve these goals involves a series of clean cookstoves demonstration to be implemented by Yayasan Dian Desa (YDD), with the support of ESDM and the World Bank. During these demonstration, YDD will work in collaboration with the market aggregator to promote clean cookstoves to target communities in 42 locations throughout the pilot program region.

On May 25, 2015, the Yayasan Dian Desa clean cookstove team implemented a cookstove demonstration in the village of Kedungurang, Banyumas, Central Java in cooperation with an I-CSI market aggregator, Kopernik. Kedungurang village is set in a hilly region, creating logistical challenges for the YDD team when attempting to reach this location. En route to the village, the team car could not climb the hill and instead had to call in reinforcement by motorbike. Despite these initial obstacles, the team – and cookstoves – arrived on schedule and successfully carried out the demonstration.

The event opened with an explanation of clean cookstoves and the importance of supplanting traditional with clean stoves for family health. Every day, biomass users are exposed to the harmful effects of smoke resulting from wood burning in traditional cooking appliances. This triggers various respiratory diseases including respiratory infection, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and in many cases, lead to premature death. These health risks can be mitigated by the use of clean cookstoves.

The demonstration carried out in Kedungurang village is one of a series of demonstration events that will be carried out by YDD. Clean cookstoves demonstration activities consist of demonstrating the cookstoves with a full cooking cycle, a methodology that is adapted to the cooking practices of those in the target communities in Central Java and Yogyakarta.
